Show off your gorgeous homegrown tomatoes, and enjoy tomato hors d’oeuvres and cocktails prepared by Chef William Dissen at the Market Place on Saturday, August 11 from 2-5 p.m.
Tuesday I saw the most beautiful tomato ever ~ in Joe Evans’ (Paper Crane Farm) booth at the West Asheville Tailgate Market. I don’t know the cultivar name. It was striped green, red, and purple, and absolutely exquisite (sorry, I didn’t get a picture) and just the sort of tomato that would win a tomato contest.
Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) and The Market Place are sponsoring the contest. Enter your tastiest and prettiest tomatoes in the Homegrown Tomato Contest for a chance to win $100 gift certificate to The Market Place, Goodies from Sow True Seed, $25 in Market Bucks to the Asheville City Market, and a free pass to ASAP’s Local Farm Tour in September.
Enter a tomato in the “Ugliest” contest too!
This is a fundraiser for ASAP, so there is a charge. It costs $10 to enter the contest. If you don’t have homegrown tomatoes to enter, the public can still come and enjoy the festivities for just $20. Hey, this is a great deal. For just ten bucks, you get to eat hors d’oeuvres at the Market Place, visit with your friends and fellow gardeners, and possibly win some awesome prizes. And remember…each entrant will be helping out ASAP, our local organization that helps farmers by promoting LOCAL food. Pick out your prettiest ‘mater and show up on Saturday, August 14.
